Youngs Literal Translation

11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. And there was a certain one ailing, Lazarus, from Bethany, of the village of Mary and Martha her sister --
11:2 (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) and it was Mary who did anoint the Lord with ointment, and did wipe his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ailing --
11:3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. therefore sent the sisters unto him, saying, `Sir, lo, he whom thou dost love is ailing;'
11:4 When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. and Jesus having heard, said, `This ailment is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.'
11:5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. And Jesus was loving Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus,
11:6 When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. when, therefore, he heard that he is ailing, then indeed he remained in the place in which he was two days,
11:7 Then after that saith he to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again. then after this, he saith to the disciples, `We may go to Judea again;'
11:8 His disciples say unto him, Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee; and goest thou thither again? the disciples say to him, `Rabbi, now were the Jews seeking to stone thee, and again thou dost go thither!'
11:9 Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. Jesus answered, `Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any one may walk in the day, he doth not stumble, because the light of this world he doth see;
11:10 But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. and if any one may walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.'
11:11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. These things he said, and after this he saith to them, `Lazarus our friend hath fallen asleep, but I go on that I may awake him;'
11:12 Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. therefore said his disciples, `Sir, if he hath fallen asleep, he will be saved;'
11:13 Howbeit Jesus spake of his death: but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. but Jesus had spoken about his death, but they thought that about the repose of sleep he speaketh.
11:14 Then said Jesus unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead. Then, therefore, Jesus said to them freely, `Lazarus hath died;
11:15 And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. and I rejoice, for your sake, (that ye may believe,) that I was not there; but we may go to him;'
11:16 Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us also go, that we may die with him. therefore said Thomas, who is called Didymus, to the fellow-disciples, `We may go -- we also, that we may die with him,'
11:17 Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Jesus, therefore, having come, found him having been four days already in the tomb.
11:18 Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: And Bethany was nigh to Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off,
11:19 And many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. and many of the Jews had come unto Martha and Mary, that they might comfort them concerning their brother;
11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house. Martha, therefore, when she heard that Jesus doth come, met him, and Mary kept sitting in the house.
11:21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Martha, therefore, said unto Jesus, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;
11:22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee. but even now, I have known that whatever thou mayest ask of God, God will give to thee;'
11:23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again. Jesus saith to her, `Thy brother shall rise again.'
11:24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day. Martha saith to him, `I have known that he will rise again, in the rising again in the last day;'
11:25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: Jesus said to her, `I am the rising again, and the life; he who is believing in me, even if he may die, shall live;
11:26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this? and every one who is living and believing in me shall not die -- to the age;
11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world. believest thou this?' she saith to him, `Yes, sir, I have believed that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming to the world.'
11:28 And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calleth for thee. And these things having said, she went away, and called Mary her sister privately, saying, `The Teacher is present, and doth call thee;'
11:29 As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. she, when she heard, riseth up quickly, and doth come to him;
11:30 Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him. and Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was in the place where Martha met him;
11:31 The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goeth unto the grave to weep there. the Jews, therefore, who were with her in the house, and were comforting her, having seen Mary that she rose up quickly and went forth, followed her, saying -- `She doth go away to the tomb, that she may weep there.'
11:32 Then when Mary was come where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died. Mary, therefore, when she came where Jesus was, having seen him, fell at his feet, saying to him, `Sir, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died;'
11:33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, Jesus, therefore, when he saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her weeping, did groan in the spirit, and troubled himself, and he said,
11:34 And said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see. `Where have ye laid him?' they say to him, `Sir, come and see;'
11:35 Jesus wept. Jesus wept.
11:36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! The Jews, therefore, said, `Lo, how he was loving him!'
11:37 And some of them said, Could not this man, which opened the eyes of the blind, have caused that even this man should not have died? and certain of them said, `Was not this one, who did open the eyes of the blind man, able to cause that also this one might not have died?'
11:38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus, therefore, again groaning in himself, cometh to the tomb, and it was a cave, and a stone was lying upon it,
11:39 Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. Jesus saith, `Take ye away the stone;' the sister of him who hath died -- Martha -- saith to him, `Sir, already he stinketh, for he is four days dead;'
11:40 Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? Jesus saith to her, `Said I not to thee, that if thou mayest believe, thou shalt see the glory of God?'
11:41 Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. They took away, therefore, the stone where the dead was laid, and Jesus lifted his eyes upwards, and said, `Father, I thank Thee, that Thou didst hear me;
11:42 And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. and I knew that Thou always dost hear me, but, because of the multitude that is standing by, I said `it', that they may believe that Thou didst send me.'
11:43 And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And these things saying, with a loud voice he cried out, `Lazarus, come forth;'
11:44 And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go. and he who died came forth, being bound feet and hands with grave-clothes, and his visage with a napkin was bound about; Jesus saith to them, `Loose him, and suffer to go.'
11:45 Then many of the Jews which came to Mary, and had seen the things which Jesus did, believed on him. Many, therefore, of the Jews who came unto Mary, and beheld what Jesus did, believed in him;
11:46 But some of them went their ways to the Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. but certain of them went away unto the Pharisees, and told them what Jesus did;
11:47 Then gathered the chief priests and the Pharisees a council, and said, What do we? for this man doeth many miracles. the chief priests, therefore, and the Pharisees, gathered together a sanhedrim, and said, `What may we do? because this man doth many signs?
11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation. if we may let him alone thus, all will believe in him; and the Romans will come, and will take away both our place and nation.'
11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, and a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being chief priest of that year, said to them, `Ye have not known anything,
11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. nor reason that it is good for us that one man may die for the people, and not the whole nation perish.'
11:51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation; And this he said not of himself, but being chief priest of that year, he did prophesy that Jesus was about to die for the nation,
11:52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad. and not for the nation only, but that also the children of God, who have been scattered abroad, he may gather together into one.
11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death. From that day, therefore, they took counsel together that they may kill him;
11:54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near to the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim, and there continued with his disciples. Jesus, therefore, was no more freely walking among the Jews, but went away thence to the region nigh the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim, and there he tarried with his disciples.
11:55 And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand: and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. And the passover of the Jews was nigh, and many went up to Jerusalem out of the country before the passover, that they might purify themselves;
11:56 Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast? they were seeking, therefore, Jesus, and said one with another, standing in the temple, `What doth appear to you -- that he may not come to the feast?'
11:57 Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that, if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. and both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a command, that if any one may know where he is, he may shew `it', so that they may seize him.
